Why food storage?

Many people wonder, “Why food storage?”. Food storage is for those “what if” situations. What if there is an earthquake or some other natural disaster that is out of my control? What if there is a power outage? What if I loose my job? What if I get sick and am unable to work? The list goes on and on! While at an Expo I asked a woman why food storage was important to her, she said, “my greatest fear is that something will happen and I will not be able to feed my children”. Food storage is insurance for you and your family. For those times that your unable to get food or water from the grocery store, whether the cause is from a natural disaster or finacial hardship. Did you know that most grocery stores have only 72 hours worth of food in stock? This means that what fresh foods they have on hand are expected to sell within 72 hours of arrival to avoid spoilage. This does not mean there is a 72 hours supply of food for every person in your city. We’ve all seen the images on the news, when a natural disaster happens the grocery stores are completly emptied within hours. Think about it, if something happened today and you were unable to get to the grocery store in a short time, how long would you and your family be able to live off of what food and water is in your home? In both cases of Super Storm Sandy and Hurrican Katrina it took 3 to 5 days before relief efforts were able to bring in food and water to those victims. Personally, I don’t want to rely on the timeline of anyone else in order to take care of my family in case of an emergency. Food storage is insurance for you and your family. For those times that your unable to get food or water from the grocery store, whether the cause is from a natural disaster or finacial hardship, we can help you prepare for that emergency.

Want to store water? Here are a few tips!

If getting your food storage and emergency preparedness together is one of your new year’s resolutions, don’t forget to add water storage to your list!  Many people work diligently to get their food storage up to par, but frequently forget that water is more important than food when preparing for an emergency!  A healthy person can survive up to 8 weeks without food if they have water, but only a few days without depending on the circumstances.  For example, if you are in the shade, you could go longer without water, but in high degree temperatures dehydration could set in within a few hours resulting in death in a matter of only a couple of days. It has been shown that if you lose just 2.5% of your body weight from water loss, you will loose 25% of your efficiency. For a 175 pound man that is only about two quarts of water. As the survivor dehydrates, his blood becomes thicker and loses volume (www.survivaltopics.com).  In a survival situation, you can’t afford to loose 25% of your mental capacity!  Bottom line, you need to store water!  How do you do it?  Here are a few tips from FEMA:

1- Have at least a 3 day supply of water for each person in your home. Plan for 1 gallon per person per day.  If there is a nursing mother, small children or individuals with special medical needs, you will want to plan for extra water for these individuals.

*If 4 people are in your household you need at least 12 gallons of water for a 3 day supply.

2- It is recommended that you use food grade storage containers for water storage. If you purchase food grade storage containers you will want to rinse them with warm water and a few drops of dish soap.  Be sure and rinse them well to remove any residual soap.  If you choose to use your own, the best suggested containers are the 2 liter soda bottles.  Before filling, sanitize the bottles by adding a solution of 1 teaspoon of non-scented liquid household chlorine bleach to a quart of water. Swish the sanitizing solution in the bottle so that it touches all surfaces. After sanitizing the bottle, thoroughly rinse out the sanitizing solution with clean water.

3- Fill the bottle to the top with regular tap water. If the water has been commercially treated from a water utility with chlorine, you don’t need to add anything else to the water to keep it clean. If the water you are using comes from a well or water source that is not treated with chlorine, add two drops of non-scented liquid household chlorine bleach to the water. Tightly close the container using the original cap. Be careful not to contaminate the cap by touching the inside of it with your finger. Place a date on the outside of the container so that you know when you filled it. Store in a cool, dark place. Replace the water every six months if not using commercially (store bought) bottled water. (http://www.fema.gov/plan/prepare/water.shtm)
